Located in McMinnville in the heart of the Willamette Valley, Oregon Barrel Works handcrafts traditional Burgundy & Bordeaux barrels from both French & Oregon oak. Having learned the art of French coopering during his time at Francois Freres, Rick DeFerrari combines his mastery of traditional technique with a strong desire to work directly with local winemakers to acheive their stylistic goals.
TONNELLERIE deFERRARI French Oak Barrels
A close collaboration with Nicolas Tartaret, owner of the NT Bois stave mill, enables Rick to acquire the finest raw material for his TONNELLERIE deFERRARI French Oak barrels. NT Bois is located in the Champagne region of France and is the sister company of Tonnellerie de Mercurey. During annual visits to the mill, Rick personally selects his stave wood, which is then seasoned for up to 3 years in France before being shipped to McMinnville for local coopering at Oregon Barrel Works.
Oregon Oak Barrels
In Oregon, Rick works directly with owners of small forest tracts to sustainably harvest Oregon Oak (Quercus garryana.) From the coopers perspective, Oregon Oak has more in common with French Oak than with American White Oak (Quercus alba.) OregonBarrelWorks.com gives a detailed overview of some of the differences between Oregon Oak and American White Oak.
